I was four years old the first time I visited a voice shop My mom said, "We all have to go someday," She said Voices piled up to the ceiling Violins, flutes, trumpets I borrow My mom's to ask how many When you can't say anything at all Then I guess you got no voice Walking up to the counter The shopkeeper says "welcome" "Tomorrow, we might sell you something you can use" My mom plays so soft it's A wonder he can hear her She says, "You're the only one we can try" Shopkeeper said, "Lady, There's no voice shop that'll sell to two-fingered boys" 'Cause when you can't play anything at all Then I guess you got no voice ... At all

There's something About The way my sister's butterflies are pinned Each wing So carefully As if they were never meant to fly Standing on a structure made of paper clips Pin me down, oh pin me down, oh I can't stand Oh, I know I'll walk along At home, The fork Goes on the left and never on the right And even If I don't care I have to say "I'm sorry" twenty times Standing on a structure made of paper clips Pin me down, oh pin me down, oh I can't stand it Oh, I know I'll walk along

Monday bright and early It isn't bright, but it sure is early The thought of books and bags and pencils Makes me kinda surly I don't wanna go (x3) I take my lunchbox and run out to the car My mom got me a keyboard To go around my neck It's got a strap in the back to keep it on, But I can't get it off quick I don't wanna wear it (x3) At school, the kids laugh at me My favorite class is music, But it's my least favorite, too The teacher's always telling me To do what I can do I just wanna say (x3) I'll say it just to prove you wrong My mom says school makes you smarter My dad says "What she said" But I don't see anything smart; I see Kids doing what they're told Saying what they're told Believing what they're told Being what they're told On their parents' old instruments

I think The secret to success Lies in my mother's eyes Quiet, like she got nothing to say on the matter So the brass won't get brassy and loud In her purse One day at the park She had asked me to watch I found Rose petals She had forgotten to pick out She wanted to get out Without me finding out, oh yeah Please Close your mouth And keep your hands at your side Some things on the inside Are not meant for the outside At breakfast, over eggs and burnt toast, They talk about sending me away I've got an aunt somewhere that can pay for me

Scream 02:30
When I want to get away From the voices that, every day Say the things that I don't want them to say There's a place I like to go Between our two garage doors She meets me there without a word, and we Play and laugh and say the things That we can't say anywhere else That we can't say in any way else That we can't say to anyone, anyone else We scream When the weather's nice enough And it's usually nice enough We sit beneath the big oak tree and draw pictures In the dirt And play and laugh and say the things That we can't say anywhere else That we can't say in any place else That we can't say in any way, any way else We scream The world gets awful loud sometimes I have to shout and repeat myself But with her I never have to say a word twice And when the rules have gone away No silver fork on no silver plate I know That her smile Will remain We scream

City Sounds 04:11
In the city The music's loud To fill The silence in our minds They sent me here to find myself But I've been wandering for days Hoping I can get to where I'm going Before tomorrow comes The clubs I'm passing are all saying nothing I don't wanna listen anymore It's starting to make my ears hurt I just wanna listen to her And talk together in our little code That nobody, nobody knows But technology is a wonderful thing It's a wonderful thing A wonderful thing I don't wanna wear it (x3) Anymore I'm not wrong; it's just the holes that won't fit Wish it weren't such a crime to be different I'm not quiet; it's just that people won't stop and listen And when they do They get taken away City sounds are loud and easy Tomorrow, my head'll be full up with easy

The Cure 03:10
I'm so glad you came Now we can begin The doctors called last night They know you've been waiting for this your whole life Here's the cure for you Here's the cure for me The words that you had said Were only in your head, head It's time to quit the game And listen to what us adults say Here's the cure for me So it's the cure for you Words can help us understand The things we cannot understand 'Cause God knows we can't understand We can't Take what's given to you (x3) Take it There's a cure for you (x3) I'm so glad you came

Room 02:00
I'm in a room where nobody goes I'm in a room where the wind hardly blows I'm in a room that nobody knows The words that I say just bounce off the walls The words that I say don't count Not at all The words that I say will stumble and fall Time will slip away And nothing good will stay 'Cause I am in a room And I sit here All day
